Sue Hayman has spoken to insurance bosses about homes and businesses at risk of flooding. She has warned that West Cumbrian communities will become “ghost towns” if nothing is done to make insurance affordable and available to all properties and small businesses.
If small businesses aren’t insured or supported, independent high streets, such as Cockermouth Main Street risk being lost as it will become unaffordable to trade there. This will leave just large, national chains on high streets. She has also added that many bed and breakfasts are also unable to get insurance and that the issue has been raised with BIBA, many business owners will not reopen and risk being flooded for a third time.
