Kendal students offered flood risk work experience

Posted: 04/02/26

New work experience opportunities are being promoted in Kendal designed to help students explore careers in flood risk management.

The Environment Agency and its contractors, who are working on the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme, are working with schools in the area to offer insights into STEM careers through both virtual and in-person placements.

This follows last year’s Constructing Change Day, which involved 50 Year 9 students from Kirkbie Kendal, Queen Katherine and Queen Elizabeth School.

Richard Knight, area flood risk manager for Cumbria and Lancashire, said: “These are great opportunity for young people in the Kendal area, who have seen the Environment Agency with their contractors delivering one of the largest civil engineering projects in the country, find out more about a career with us.

“We hope local young people will take up the opportunity of learning more about careers with the Environment Agency through the portal on our Flood Hub, entitled Career Pathways.

“There are so many different opportunities from engineering to water management.

“These programmes will provide students with knowledge and also proof of their work experience for their university, apprenticeship and job applications.”

The team is now promoting both virtual and in-person work experience with the Environment Agency for school and university students.

For university students, a new work experience placement is being offered for 2026, with applications set to close on Sunday, February 15.

The Kendal scheme currently supports apprentices and employs members of the community.

For those aged 13 and above, the Environment Agency’s virtual programme through Springpod offers over six hours of interactive content and results in a certificate upon completion.

The placement introduces students to the Environment Agency’s flood and coastal risk management work, future career options, and includes activities and quizzes to reinforce learning.

The application deadline for the programme is also Sunday, February 15.

Further details can be found at www.thefloodhub.co.uk/kendal/ under the Career Pathway section.

The Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme is one of the largest civil engineering projects in the country, and is designed to better protect the town from flooding.
