We’re excited to announce the launch of our KS4 GSCE River Landscapes Education Package, designed to support Geography teachers in delivering engaging and informative lessons on targeting the GCSE topic, river landscapes in the UK.
Download the package here: https://thefloodhub.co.uk/ks4-river-landscapes/
The 7-lesson series covers a wide range of sub-topics within the river landscapes topic including: river processes, long and cross profiles, upper, middle and lower course of a river, flooding, hydrographs and flooding management. Each lesson has been designed to incorporate all the essential knowledge students need at GCSE level, whilst also ensuring engaged learning. The lessons incorporate quick recap activities, diagrams and images, linked YouTube videos and easy to follow informative slides. They feature ready to teach PowerPoint lessons with structured lesson plan and teachers notes, along with worksheets which feature GCSE style practice questions.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the lessons and what they include:
Processes
This lesson begins by introducing the river landscape from source to mouth, before going on to explore fluvial processes which help shape a river’s landscape. These processes are: erosion, weathering, mass movement, transportation and deposition.
Long and cross profiles
This lesson looks at the long and cross profile of a river and how these change throughout the course. This lesson incorporates mathematical skills as formulas are used throughout to calculate cross-sectional area, river discharge and velocity.
Upper, middle and lower course part 1
This lesson looks at the upper, middle and lower course of a river, before exploring the upper course in more detail. You can find explanations of each of the landforms found in the upper course, along with the processes which form them.
Upper, middle and lower course part 2
This lesson looks at the middle and lower course of a river and the landforms which are found in these areas. You can find explanations about the landforms, with clear diagrams and step-by-step formation.
Flooding
This lesson explores flooding and the impacts it brings on communities. Flood risk can be influenced by human and physical factors, some of which can increase or decrease the risk. This lesson explores and compares these, along with the social, economic and environmental impacts.
Hydrographs
This lesson explores hydrographs, what they area, what they show and how we can interpret the. A hydrograph is used to show how river discharge changes in response to a period of rainfall.
Flooding management
This lesson explores the hard and soft engineering techniques and strategies used to manage flood risk. It provides the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, before allowing students the opportunity to make comparisons and arguments to answer GCSE-style questions.
These resources are intended to complement existing teaching and teachers can adapt and incorporate them into their own lessons as needed. This package is designed to support most GCSE examination boards, however, teachers must ensure they follow the requirements of their own exam board’s specification when delivering lessons.
The KS4 GCSE package is available for download and use on The Flood Hub. This package forms the latest addition to the Learning resource section on The Flood Hub. Extra resources, including lesson packages aimed at KS2 and KS3 can be found here.
