The first phase of a flood scheme for Carlisle which is set to get one of the highest levels or flood protection in the country was approved last week with work due to begin this summer.
It comes more than three years after 2000 homes were devastated by the flooding brought by Storm Desmond. The first phase of the scheme will see existing defences in the area of Melbourne Park raised and extended. Work will also take place at the entrance to Tesco Supermarket at its junction with Warwick Road.
According to the EA, the new and improved defences will protect 1200 properties from flooding without increasing the risk of flooding elsewhere.
Planning permission for phase 2 of the scheme which will be in the area of The Sands Centre will be submitted later this year and granted permission, would get underway next year, with phases three and hour following on from that.
