The Environment Agency is responsible for taking a strategic overview of the management of all sources of flooding and coastal erosion in England. This includes, for example, setting the direction for managing the risks through strategic plans; providing evidence and advice to inform Government policy and support others; working collaboratively to support the development of risk management skills and capacity; and providing a framework to support local delivery.

The Environment Agency also has operational responsibility for managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea, as well as being a coastal erosion risk management authority. The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 places a statutory duty on the Environment Agency to develop a National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy for England. The strategy sets out a vision of a nation ready for, and resilient to, flooding and coastal change – today, tomorrow and to the year 2100.

How to stay safe in a flood

Prepare a bag that includes medical and insurance documents.
Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water .
Check your insurance to make sure you are covered for flood damage. If you rent your home, it is your responsibility to have insurance for your belongings.
You can make changes to your property that will help you to get back to normal more quickly after a flood and reduce the damage flooding can do. This includes things such as laying tiles instead of carets, moving electrical sockets higher up the wall or fitting flood protection products.
If you are flooded, call 999 if in immediate danger and follow advice from emergency services.

In many flood risk areas, you can sign up for flood warnings. These warn of the risk of flooding from rivers, the sea and groundwater. You’ll be alerted by phone, email or text when flooding is expected.
