A multimillion-pound project to improve flood defences and avoid power cuts in Lancaster has been completed.
Electricity North West, the region’s power network operator, finished the £5.7million job at its substation in Caton Road earlier this month. As part of the work, electronic equipment was replaced and improved, engineers raised parts of the substation on to higher platforms and equipment was placed in new raised containerised buildings.
The work took place after the power hub was damaged following the floods caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015. Storm Desmond caused the River Lune to overtop and breach the one-in-a-100 year flood defences which were upgraded and put in place in 2010. Many homes and businesses were flooded in various parts of the city and around 55,000 properties were left without power for up to three days.
Electricity North West hope that the improvements will help protect power supplies against potential floods in the future.
Earlier this year, Electricity North West also completed a £2m project which saw 7km of underground cables replaced which power Lancaster, Morecambe and the surrounding areas.
