We’re excited to announce the launch of our KS3 Weather & Climate Education Package, designed to support Geography teachers in delivering engaging and informative lessons on weather, climate, and climate change. The package aligns with the KS3 National Curriculum and covers key topics such as extreme weather, climate change, and the impacts of environmental changes.

The 8-lesson series covers a wide range of topics, providing teachers with the necessary tools to help students understand the complexities of weather patterns, climate zones, and the growing issue of climate change. Each lesson includes a PowerPoint, teacher’s notes, and a worksheet, making it easy to incorporate into your teaching plan.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the lessons:
Introduction to Weather
Students will explore different types of weather, how it’s measured, and the instruments used in weather forecasting. This lesson sets the stage for understanding weather patterns and their role in the wider context of climate and extreme weather.
Extreme Weather in the UK
Focusing on the different types of extreme weather events that affect the UK, this lesson delves into the role of Environment Agency flood warnings and looks at recent storms, including the 2023-24 storms, and their impacts on communities.
Storm Desmond Case Study
Through a detailed case study, students will examine the causes of flooding and why Storm Desmond caused severe disruption in Cumbria and Lancashire. They will analyse the social, economic, and environmental effects on communities and infrastructure, and evaluate the immediate and long-term responses.
Introduction to Climate
This lesson introduces students to the concept of climate and its differences from weather. Students will explore global climate types, identify their characteristics, and examine examples of where these climate zones can be found across the world.
Factors Influencing Climate
Students will learn how latitude, altitude, continentality, and ocean currents affect the climate of different regions and how these factors contribute to the formation of global climate zones.
Climate Change
In this lesson, students will dive into the science of climate change. They will explore natural and human causes of climate change, understand the greenhouse effect, and evaluate evidence supporting the ongoing changes in the Earth’s climate.
The Impacts of Climate Change
Students will study how climate change could shift the Earth’s climate belts and the resulting impacts, such as increased flooding and the spread of tropical diseases. The lesson also covers the environmental, social, and economic impacts of climate change on both global and local scales.
Managing Climate Change
The final lesson in the package focuses on mitigation and adaptation strategies for managing climate change. Students will learn how they can reduce the impacts of climate change in their own lives through everyday actions and choices.
The KS3 Weather & Climate Education Package is now available for download on The Flood Hub. Each lesson is designed to be flexible, so teachers can use them in the classroom or as part of remote learning.
Whether you’re teaching about extreme weather, climate change, or the impacts of flooding, this resource will help guide your students through these topics in an engaging and informative way.
