Introduction

The town of Fleetwood is located at the northern tip of the Wyre Peninsula on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire. The peninsula is bounded by the Wyre Estuary to the east, Morecambe Bay to the north and the Irish Sea coastal frontage to the west.

The low-lying dish shaped topography of the peninsula means that large areas of Fleetwood are susceptible to tidal flooding from multiple locations. The risk of flooding is likely to increase in the future as a result of climate change.

Flood Risk at Fleetwood

There is history of flooding impacting the Wyre Peninsula and Fleetwood. Tidal flooding causes by far the greatest impact, with the most recent major tidal flood events occurring in 1927 and 1977.
